ATC Bike Tour – Breaking the Cycle

Birmingham, AL July 1, 2009 - Alabama Teen Challenge (ATC) staff and students will participate in a 300+ mile bike tour from Hayden to Gulf Shores beginning October 19th to promote awareness that the cycle of addiction can be broken and to raise contributions for Alabama Teen Challenge scholarships.

For more than 50 years Teen Challenge has been providing quality, low cost recovery programs for individuals of all ages. With four facilities serving greater Alabama, ATC is part of one of America’s oldest, largest and most successful faith-based drug and alcohol restoration programs.

ATC provides not only loving safe haven facilities for men and women struggling with life-controlling problems, but the long term counseling and environment they need to turn their lives around in a more positive direction.

"The road to recovery is paved with the knowledge that there is real hope for every addict. Once this is realized, no one is viewed as beyond help."  - Director of Development, Brandon Lackey

Drug Abuse Statistics:
-
Over 50% of all child abuse and neglect cases substantiated by child protective services involve some degree of alcohol or other use by the child’s parents.
-
Among youths age 12 to 17, 11.6% were current illicit drug users
- Alcohol is a key factor in up to 68% of manslaughters, 62% of assaults, 54% of murders/attempted murders, and 48% of robberies.
- In one study of youthful suicide attempts, drug and alcohol abuse was the most common; fully 70%
